Trauma

Derived from the Greek word for wound, traumatic incidents cover a wide range of relatively common occurrences from natural disasters, to criminal acts to industrial accidents.
When left "unattended", traumatic incidents can fester into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with a host of symptoms from flashbacks, to acute anxiety and avoidance of all reminders of the incident.
Early intervention (providing social support and information about reactions to trauma) facilitate processing and facilitates a return to normal life. Psychotherapy aims to help survivors confront and digest incidents whilst learning to cope with symptoms.
